## Definition

Frame rate is the number of individual video frames displayed per second (fps), determining the smoothness and motion character of video playback. Common frame rates are 24fps (cinematic), 30fps (broadcast), and 60fps (smooth action).

## Extended Definition

Frame rate profoundly affects the perceived look and feel of video. 24fps produces the slight motion blur associated with cinema and is the standard for narrative film and high-production YouTube content. 30fps (or 29.97fps for broadcast) is the standard for television and general social media content. 60fps produces a smoother, more lifelike look often associated with sports broadcasts, gaming content, and tutorials where motion clarity is important. Higher frame rates (120fps, 240fps) are used for slow-motion capture, where footage filmed at high fps is played back at 24 or 30fps to produce cinematic slow-motion. AI video generation models typically generate content at a fixed frame rate, often 24fps or 30fps. For social media, 30fps or 60fps are both acceptable; platform re-encoding does not significantly degrade either.
