Instagram Reels explained

Instagram Reels launched in 2020 as Meta's competitive response to TikTok. Reels are displayed in the dedicated Reels tab, the main Feed, and the Explore page, where algorithmic distribution reaches users who do not follow the creator's account. Reels up to 90 seconds are supported, with Instagram recommending 15-30 second videos for highest completion rates. Technical requirements include 9:16 aspect ratio (1080x1920 recommended), MP4 or MOV format, and audio track inclusion (Reels without sound have lower organic reach). The Instagram Reels safe zone must account for the like and comment button rail on the right and the username/caption bar at the bottom. Reels can be cross-posted to Facebook Reels automatically, doubling distribution reach.
