A storyboard is a visual planning document showing a sequence of illustrated or described scenes depicting the planned shots, camera angles, and composition of a video before production begins.

## Extended Definition

Storyboards originated in film production as a way to pre-visualize sequences before expensive filming. For video creators, storyboarding serves a simpler but equally important purpose: planning what each scene will show, what will be said, and how the segments connect narratively. A basic storyboard can be sketch thumbnails with scene notes, a written shot list, or a structured script with scene descriptions. In AI video generation, the storyboard maps to scene-by-scene prompt writing: each storyboard panel becomes a text prompt that generates a visual clip. This connection between planning and execution is tighter with AI tools because the storyboard and the generation prompts are effectively the same document.
