## Definition

A transition is a visual effect applied between two video clips or scenes to create a smooth or stylized changeover from one to the next.

## Extended Definition

Common transitions include cuts (instant switch), fades (gradual opacity change), dissolves (cross-blend between clips), wipes (one clip pushes another off screen), and zoom transitions (camera movement bridges scenes). In short-form video, fast cuts and whip pans are popular for maintaining energy and pacing. Overusing flashy transitions can distract from content, so most professional editors prefer simple cuts with occasional stylized transitions for emphasis.
