Is HEVC the same as MP4?

No. HEVC, also called H.265, compresses the video. MP4 stores video and audio tracks and can contain HEVC or H.264. Changing a filename to .mp4 does not change the codec.

Does this convert HEVC to H.264?

Yes, when your browser can decode the source. The output uses H.264 video in an MP4 container, with AAC audio if the source has sound. The tool stops if it cannot preserve a video or audio track.

Why does my HEVC file fail in this browser?

HEVC decoding depends on your browser, operating system, hardware and the recording’s profile. Try a device that can play the original or export an H.264 copy from your source app. On a Mac, QuickTime Player offers a Greater Compatibility (H.264) export.

Can I convert an iPhone MOV recording?

Yes, if its video and audio tracks are supported on your device. MOV is a container and can hold HEVC video. Choose the original recording; there is no need to rename it first.

Will the converted video be smaller or lossless?

Neither is guaranteed. H.264 re-encoding can change image quality and may produce a larger file than HEVC. Keep the original, especially for HDR or Dolby Vision recordings, and compare color and brightness before replacing it.

Is there a file-size limit?

Yes. Each source file must be at most 512 MB. Conversion happens in browser memory, so a device may still struggle with a long or high-resolution file below that limit.

If your HEVC video will not convert

An MP4 filename does not prove H.264 compatibility. HEVC conversion re-encodes the video; it needs your browser to decode the original first.

Try playing the original on the same device. If it fails, changing the filename will not repair it.
On a Mac, open it in QuickTime Player, choose File → Export As, then Greater Compatibility (H.264).
For future iPhone recordings, Camera → Formats → Most Compatible records H.264. This does not convert recordings you already have.
Keep the original and compare sound, orientation, color and brightness in the exported file.
